Jan Hooimeijer, DVM, CPBC

Dr. Jan Hooimeijer graduate from the Veterinary Faculty University, Utrecht, in 1982.  He was the owner of the Clinic for Birds from 1983 until he founded the Consultancy Practice for Birds in 2013. Dr. Hooimeijer is a Certified Parrot Behavior Consultant and is a member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, the Welfare Committee AAV, and the Conservation Committee AAV. He is also a member of the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Ethology, founder/chairman of the Dutch Parrot Foundation and the president/founder of the Avian Healthcare Company.

His work includes the development of the 5-step behavior protocol for dealing with and handling parrots, and preventing and solving behavior problems and has also established definitions to recognize and understand the differences between normal behavior, desired behavior, undesired behavior, and enforced behavior. Dr. Hooimeijer emphasizes that understanding, recognizing, dealing with and using displacement behavior as described by Dr. Nico Tinbergen is crucial to deal with behavior problems. He is also the found of the Dutch Parrot Walks, which aims to promote the importance of the development of strong social relationships between parrots and people, and to promote the role of parrots as part of the family.

He has presented many papers/workshops at 71 conferences/symposiums (many international) concerning avian medicine and welfare

Dr. Hooimeijer is working in cooperation with Dr. Irene Pepperberg, to present a one-day seminar concerning the intelligence, cognition and welfare of parrots.
